Rome in Contemporary American Discourse

The central area of study is the city of Rome in its various manifestations, historical and imagined, in relation to higher education and public discourse in the United States. How can one take proper account of a phenomenon such as Rome in the context of the modern university? Why is it so urgent to address this issue now?
