National Science Foundation (NSF):
The National Science Foundation’s REU summer internships are a recognized set of programs intended to give undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in research experiences during the summer at participating universities nationwide. REU internships are available in a wide array of fields. Participants will work with an advising faculty member and their research group throughout the summer, developing an independent research project and presenting their results at the conclusion of the program. Scripps Institution of Oceanography:
The Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, California conducts a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program annually, aimed at exposing interested students to oceanographic research and providing mentoring and career guidance. Undergraduate interns choose to work directly with a sponsoring researcher and investigate a specific research topic during the program. The application process is highly selective, but if selected, the cost of an intern’s participation is fully covered by the program. National Aeronautics and Space Administration:
NASA offers paid undergraduate and graduate level internships in a wide variety of disciplines. Over 200 internships are available. Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University:
The Lamont Summer Intern Program provides interested undergraduate students with an opportunity to participate in research at Columbia University’s Earth Institute over the course of the summer months. A list of potential advisors and topics are made available annually during the spring, and applicants are expected to choose a preferred advisor during the application process. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
WHOI’s Summer Student Fellowship program is a valuable internship opportunity extended to undergraduate students following a competitive application process. Participants work directly with researchers at Woods Hole on a variety of research projects, and the internship also organizes workshops and events geared towards informing students about future career opportunities and preparing them for graduate school and advanced research. University of Pennsylvania: Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships:
CURF offers a unique funding opportunity in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania’s Climate Action Plan. Students can apply for the Penn Undergraduate Climate Action Grant for awards of between $2,500 and $5,000 in order to pursue sustainability-related research. Application details are located at:

Oregon State University College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences:
Oregon State University’s COAS offers an NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates internship. 20 students each year are admitted to preform independent summer research under the supervision of a faculty member. The program also hosts seminars and events that are designed to provide interns with useful career perspectives and advice. Students are fully funded for the duration of the internship, and recieve a stipend courtesy of the National Science Foundation. Internships are also available at the Hatfield Marine Science Center. The application process is competitive, and is ideally suited to undergraduate students entering their junior or senior year during that summer.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR):
Located in Boulder, Colorado, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) holds the SOARS (Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science) program, which caters to undergraduate students interested in atmospheric and climate research. The program is aimed at students from groups and backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in the atmospheric science community. Students can participate over multiple summers, with each year’s program covering a ten-week period. Interns are paid a competitive wage, with housing and transportation costs covered by NCAR. Science and Technology Policy Opportunities:

The American Association for the Advancement of Science:
The American Association for the Advancement of Science offers an internship with the Office of Government Relations at the AAAS in both the spring and summer for undergraduate and graduate science students interested in science and technology policy. The summer internship includes a stipend and is full-time.

The United States Department of Energy:
The DOE offers an Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Science and Technology Policy Fellowship for scientists and researchers in related fields with an interest in energy policy and technology, as well as in factors and concerns that influence the energy sector. Fellowships are offered at three different levels aimed at graduates and researchers with different areas of expertise and backgrounds of experience, ranging from holders of undergraduate degrees to Senior Fellows with more than three years of post-doctorate research or technical experience. The MIT/WHOI Joint Program is a highly selective graduate research program culminating in a PhD degree after five years of study that is jointly awarded by both Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Students are given access to the full range of faculty and resources offered by both institutions, and apply to one of five areas of research: Applied Ocean Science and Engineering, Biological Oceanography, Chemical Oceanography, Marine Geology and Geophysics, and Physical Oceanography. Students are admitted with full funding, often through “a research assistantship or internal fellowship, or a combination of the two.”
