Welcome

The Center for Sustainable Separations of Metals (CSSM) was a National Science Foundation Center for Chemical Innovation from July 2019 to December 2022. This website remains to provide some history of the Center and is no longer actively managed. For further inquiries about the CSSM, contact Professor Eric Schelter (schelter@sas.upenn.edu), former Director of the CSSM. For further information on the NSF Center for Chemical Innovation Program and for links to the website of the other centers funded by the program, visit www.nsf-cci.com.

CSSM scientists worked on developing cross-disciplinary chemistry for greener mining and the efficient recycling of critical metals such as lithium, cobalt, gold, rare earths, tantalum, tellurium, and others. Efforts in the center were focused on the development of new, sustainable metals-processing that produces minimal waste and environmental harm.
