DEPARTING PHILADELPHIA

Depending on your date of departure and mode of travel, please follow these instructions:

For those who are leaving via Philadelphia International Airport on Saturday, August 6th
A1 Limousine will provide airport shuttle service on the hour every hour beginning at 6:00 AM with the last trip to the airport leaving at 11:00 AM. Please wait at 40th and Locust Streets for shuttle pick-up. If you need or prefer to leave for the airport outside shuttle hours, please follow instructions below to take a taxi.

For those who are leaving via bus or train or who prefer to take a taxi
A taxi is the most convenient way to travel from campus to 30th Street Station or other bus/train station. Depending on the time of day and to which station you are traveling, cab fare should cost no more than $10.00-15.00 including tip. A flate rate of $28.50 applies to trips to the airport. You will be expected to pay at the time of service. Cash is preferred, but credit cards are also accepted. If you wish to pay by credit, please let your driver know up front. Consider sharing a taxi with another FLTA to split the cost.

For those who are leaving in the very early morning hours, it may be difficult to hail a taxi. Therefore, you may want to call a taxi by telephone instead. If you are calling from a University land line (such as the phone at the front desk of the dorm), please dial “9” first, and then the phone number. Below are several Philadelphia taxi companies and their phone numbers:

  • Olde City Taxi: 215-247-7678
  • Quaker City Cabs: 215-728-8000
  • United: 215-625-2881

As an alternative to taxis, Philadelphia is also well-serviced by Uber and Lyft.

BAGGAGE FEES

Most airlines charge a fee for checked baggage on flights within the United States. Therefore, if you are flying from Philadelphia to another U.S. city, you will likely have to pay this fee upon check-in.

On average, airlines charge $25 for the first bag, and $35-50 for the second bag. Overweight bags are also assessed an additional charge. You can refer to this website for all applicable fees. The travel allowance you receive on the first day of orientation will offset any baggage expense you may incur.

For convenience and in some cases a small discount, you can pay for your checked bags online before checking in. Please refer to your airline’s website for more information.

Note: We highly recommend that you pack as lightly as possible! There are no porters to handle your baggage once you land in Philadelphia. Please also consider shipping items to your host institution to avoid baggage fees. Many websites such as Amazon.com and Target.com offer free shipping if you wish to purchase new things for your stay.
