Sales Intern, Marketing Intern, Publicity Intern

Small Press Distribution is the only non-profit distributor in the country dedicated to independently published literature. Because we’re a nonprofit, everything we do is aimed at making essential, underrepresented and experimental books available in the commercial marketplace, as well as able to participate in a national literary culture. We do this by offering book distribution, information services, and public advocacy programs to hundreds of small publishers.

As a historic part of the small press ecosystem, SPD’s on-site warehouse boasts over 13,000 titles, including books and literary magazines some of which are now rare and out of print. When customers buy a book from us, they don’t just get something terrific to read: they help independent publishers and writers keep more money from their projects, which in turn helps nurture and sustain the literary arts as a whole.

Who We are Looking For

SPD is seeking a sales, marketing and publicity intern with a creative spirit and enthusiasm for small press literature. We are a casual and fun-spirited office that tends to be busy, and so require someone with the ability to keep track of their own schedule and juggle a self-directed set of tasks. Since bookselling, publishing and distribution involves a wide range of tasks, interns may also have the opportunity to gain some experience in non-profit management, fundraising and archival work. We are open to collaboratively developing individual summer projects – past interns have focused on projects during their time here such as building the SPD blog with feature-length articles, presenting a reading series, excavating San Francisco queer poetic history, donations to prison literature projects and more.
