Biology and Race

Long standing interests in the history of scientific racism have led me to the debate surrounding 19th century physician Samuel Morton. In “The Making and Unmaking of Race,” my co-curators and I investigate the ways that Samuel Morton’s cranial measurements were used to construct modern, biological notions of race. This exhitrk drew me into the recent controversy about Stephen Jay Gould’s analysis of Morton’s measurements. And it will serve as the basis of a future film about Morton and scientific racism.
