Philadelphia’s Youth Poet Laureate — applications now being accepted

The Free Library of Philadelphia is proud to now be leading the Poet Laureate Program. I am honored to continue as a member of the Poet Laureate Selection Committee. We will be accepting submissions from young poets in all styles including written and spoken word, ages 13-18 who are interested in representing Philadelphia as its 5th Youth Poet Laureate. The Poet Laureate Governing Committee, comprised of poets and literary leaders in the City, will choose three finalists from which one will be selected as the Youth Poet Laureate at an announcement in September 2017.

Along with the prestigious title of Youth Poet Laureate for the City of Philadelphia, the winning poet will also receive a book deal from Penmanship Books to publish their first collection of poems. They will be mentored by the Philadelphia Poet Laureate, currently Yolanda Wisher, and have the opportunity to share their poetry and leadership at events across the city. The Youth Poet Laureate receives a stipend of $1,000.

Eligibility guidelines and the application are available here:

We are working on a tight timeline this year so please help us by reaching out to young poets and encouraging them to apply. I also appreciate your forwarding/posting this call to relevant lists. The application requires an adult reference who can be a teacher, mentor, or friend. Please help the young poets in your network be considered.
