This project will conduct representative surveys across Aleppo and Mosul from 2021. These two cities were both severely damaged during the recent conflicts, including the deliberate targeting of key heritage sites by the Islamic State and other actors. Both cities have also seen the launch of a number of heritage preservation and reconstruction projects in recent years. The surveys seek to gauge Syrian and Iraqi opinion on heritage, its destruction, and the role its reconstruction can play in fostering peace. The surveys are to be administered by the Arab Barometer (Princeton University). All surveys are voluntary, anonymous and non-identifiable, and results will be uploaded to this webpage when and where appropriate.
