Our research team

I hold a BSc(Eng) in Environmental Engineering from the University of Guelph (1994), a Masters in Soil Science from the University of Guelph (1996), and a PhD in Soil Science from the University of Alberta (2001) – all in Canada. I postdoc’ed at the Institut National de Recherche Agronomique (INRA) in Versailles, France and the Natural Resource Ecology Lab (NREL) at Colorado State University.

My research interests lie in the fields of soil science and terrestrial carbon biogeochemistry. I am interested in the mechanisms and process that act to afterstabilize and destabilize organic carbon in surface soils, and the links between the soil carbon balance and the broader global carbon cycle.

After teaching in Penn’s Environmental Studies undergraduate major for over 15 years, I have become increasingly interested in examining the human-environment relationship from alternate viewpoints and knowledge systems in addition to science. In the spring of 2024, I completed an MPhil degree program in Environmental Humanities at Penn, with a thesis entitled “The Anthropocene as a Moment of Reckoning for Inherited Human-Environment Relationships”.
