With teaching and consulting, every day is different. I’ve always looked for that in a role. I’m very excited by waking up knowing that every day, I’m going to learn something new, I’m going to be challenged.

Right now, I’m talking to people about what they know about diversity, equity, and inclusion and anti-racism. It’s a really exciting time now to just see how our clients are adjusting to incorporating equity into their approaches, as opposed to just the typical diversity and inclusion.

I think through creating an experience for those who have been systemically marginalized, you actually end up creating a better experience for everyone.

Deloitte launched an internal initiative called the Black Action Council. It started as about 70 practitioners across all of the business areas of Deloitte to really focus on creating, changing, modifying systems within the firm to create a better experience for our Black employees.

I think through creating an experience for those who have been systemically marginalized, you actually end up creating a better experience for everyone. I was appointed to the council last summer as one of the founding members. We’ve been talking about what it looks like to recruit Black talent, or to have people of color recruiting people of color, and considered how to modify some of our coaching, mentoring, and sponsorship structures to enhance retention and career development.

As a member of the council, I work on an allyship initiative called Engage and Educate Allies. What we’re trying to do is really make sure that we’re providing resources and opportunities for people to grow their capacity for diversity, equity, and inclusion work. Folks on my team have done this through publishing stories. One outlet is called Uncensored and basically, it’s styled similar to “Humans of New York” – stories of black professionals in the firm, so people can read their stories and understand some of their vulnerabilities. It gives voice to things that you don’t really hear all the time. We’re working on resources for people with disabilities, and a firm-wide digital training where we can share the importance of allyship and have folks tell their stories about being allies and experiencing allyship across the company. — October 13, 2021
