Structural Review

1.

Synonyms

अंतर्राष्ट्रीय, संबद्ध, नमस्कार, हिस्सा, व्यापार, मशीन and many others in this unit have synonyms अन्तरराष्ट्रीय, संबंधित, नमस्ते, भाग, व्यवसाय, यंत्र. While some forms have contextualized nuances, others are personal preferences of individual speakers.

(मैं) ज़रूर चलता

This is a hypothetical/contrary to fact construction. Such constructions always use the ता/ते/ती ending without any tense marker (है/हैं/था/थे/थी, etc.). Its meaning is equivalent to ‘I would have certainly gone if …..

3.

समय मिलते ही

This is a very productive construction for all verbs. Examples: मिलते ही, आते ही, जाते ही, बोलते ही, देखते ही, etc. . It works as an adverb and the meaning is – as soon as (he/she) met/came/went/spoke, saw, etc.

4.

(आपको) सिफारिश भी करनी होगी

This is a ‘have to’ construction without the implication of any compulsion. In this construction, the subject is always followed by को and the verb phrase takes the infinitive form with the appropriate tense marker (हैं/हैं/था/थे/थी/होगा/होंगे/होगी)

5.

सर! ये अब आप को छोड़ने वाले नहीं हैं। आपको अपनी मशीन दिखाकर ही मानेंगे

This is an interesting blend of formal and informal styles, which is a reflection of an semi-formal relationship between the two interlocutors.

Cultural Notes

1.

बड़ेबुज़ुर्गों के अनुभव और आशीर्वाद  हमेशा मिलते रहने से एक तरह की शक्ति मिलती है।

Age and experience are respected in Indian society and such respect is verbalized in various ways.

2.

दालमोठ, पेठा

दालमोठ is a savory snack made from a type of lentils, and पेठा is a type of dessert made from white ash gourd (a kind of squash) dipped in sugar syrup.

Practice Activities (all responses should be in Hindi)

1.

What’s the role of socialization in business?

2.

Which elements in this unit are not to be found in an American conversation in a similar context?

3.

Role-play a similar dialogue. Let one interlocutor be an American and the other a traditional Indian and adapt the dialogue accordingly.

4.

In this unit, one interlocutor is senior in status and/or older in age. Point out the clues that support this statement.

5.

ये अब आप को छोड़ने वाले नहीं हैं

Construct three sentences illustrating similar usage of वाला.

6.

मशीन देखने आना भूलिएगा नहीं

What is the subject of this sentence?

Why is देखने in the oblique case here?

If we replace the imperative form देखिएगा with देखिए or देखना what difference would it make in the meaning?
