Purpose
This project exists to research and revitalize attitudes towards Creole languages. We strive to raise awareness about the importance of preserving and promoting linguistic diversity, and to advocate for the equitable inclusion of Creoles in classroom language curricula. Through collaborative efforts, research, and the development of materials, we aim to amplify the voices of speakers of Creole languages and empower educators with the necessary tools, resources, and support to effectively incorporate Creole languages into their classrooms.
Background
Our lab of ten researchers came together during our time in the Linguistics Department at the University of Michigan. Now, we are spread across the United States and beyond! United in the belief that “all languages are equal, legitimate, deeply creative, and worthy of use in all domains of life,”we forefront as researchers, teachers, and language users a liberated, anti-exceptionalist narrative about Creoles and other minoritized languages that emphasizes their normalcy, naturalness, creativity, diversity, and resilience. With that goal in mind, we began our community-based research project in 2021 dedicated to revitalizing attitudes towards Creole languages and promoting their equitable inclusion in linguistics pedagogy….
