Romeo Castellucci (Cesena, 1960) is a director and set, lighting and costume designer, renowned all over the world for his theatre based on the totality of the arts, aimed at creating a comprehensive perception of the artwork. He has authored several theoretical essays on the art of directing. His theatre develops a dramaturgy which overturns the supremacy of the written text, thus transforming dramatic actions into complex art forms. His works are populated by extremely rich images and communicate through expressive codes as accessible as music, sculpture, panting or architecture. In 2005 he was appointed Director of the Venice Biennale’s Theatre section; he was awarded the title of Chevalier dans l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres and was appointed “artiste associé” by the artistic management of the 2008 Festival d’Avignon. In 2013 he was presented with the Venice Biennale’s Golden Lion for lifetime achievement; the Festival d’Automne in Paris, by presenting three of his works as part of the “Biennale Portrait” series in 2014 and 2015, has confirmed him once and for all as one of the greatest artists of our time. His company, Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio, founded in 1981, is considered as one of the world’s leading theatre groups for its radical aesthetic principles and the human depth of its creations.
