Call for Exhibit Reviewers

EAS Miscellany, the digital companion to Early American Studies, is seeking qualified reviewers at all levels (graduate students, public humanities professionals, community college instructors, tenure-track faculty, and tenured faculty) to complete online reviews of digital and physical exhibits on a wide range of topics relating to the early American studies. As sites of interpretation, scholarship, and debate, public exhibits raise important questions for our field as we approach the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence: How do curators frame contested histories and conflicting narratives? How do public and private institutions adapt and respond to funding cuts, ideological shifts, and other external constraints? In what ways do digital platforms expand, democratize, or complicate access to archives and artifacts? How do exhibits balance scholarly rigor alongside accessibility for general audiences? By publishing thoughtful reviews, we seek to create a venue where early Americanists can evaluate and reflect on the current state of the public humanities field.

Exhibit List:
We are currently soliciting reviewers for a wide range of exhibits. To view our updated list, Click Here. In addition, we encourage potential reviewers, curators, and other public humanities professionals to suggest recently opened or forthcoming digital and physical exhibits for potential review.

Submission Guidelines:
Contributions should be in the range of 600 to 1000 words, but they can be longer or shorter depending on the scope of the exhibit. The review should consider the following: intended purpose(s) and audience of the exhibit, the institutional context behind the exhibit’s creation, and the overall significance and effectiveness of the exhibit. Because our audience includes not just scholars, but also interested members of the public and students, contributions should be written in an approachable, easy-to-understand, and jargon-free style.

To become an exhibit reviewer at EAS Miscellany, we ask that you complete a short Google Form. On this form, you will be asked to include the exhibit you’d like to review, your geographic location, a brief description of your scholarly interests, and why the exhibit you select is important to early American studies broadly defined. Reviews will then be assigned, reviewed, and later edited by editorial staff. If your submission is accepted for publication, you will receive editorial suggestions and will be expected to revise your submission before publication. The editors reserve the right to make the final determination of headlines, captions, pull quotes, and other forms of display. We also reserve the right to make minor copyediting changes for clarity or accuracy to the final copy. Finally, please note that submission does not guarantee publication.

Please contact Tracy L. Barnett, the Digital & Social Media Editor, at earlyamericanmisc@gmail.com with any questions.
