The landscape architects on the GERA Landscape Design team are working to create models and drawings that draw attention to key aspects of the landscape in towns that are undergoing rapid change from increased tourism and population growth. There is an immediate need to better direct this growth away from low-lying areas, which will only become more prone to flooding as growth continues and the climate warms. We aim to develop local capacity to understand the landscape and to plan effectively for the future  in two ways. First, we are constructing accurately referenced geospatial models, which are necessary to understand how the local shoreline will be impacted by climate change. Second, we are working with Galápagos communities in thinking about the future of their islands. Design proposals will be used to engage residents in imagining the impacts of future growth and climate change and to discuss options for improving the urban environment, which has not received the same attention as the protected areas of the National Park.
