SAS Green Team Awards

Green Purchasing Award 2016 – “Bright Green Idea”, Janel Baselice

SAS Green Team member since 2015, Janel Baselice was awarded a Green Purchasing Award for her Waste Reducing Bright Green Idea: reusable signage holders for bin pairings. Janel came up with the idea that the SAS Green Team purchase reusable plastic sign holders for updates to waste & recycling signage. The plastic signs are an upgrade to the previous method of laminating updated waste & recycling signs for durability. The laminated signs were single-use, and had to be put in the landfill stream when materials changed or signage was updated, as laminated paper is not recyclable. The plastic sheet holders are not only multi-use, but allow the unlaminated paper signs to be recycled as clean office paper. Janel’s Bright Green Idea was implemented in conjunction with a School-wide signage update and cost just $164.25. It has created a big reduction in waste generation as well as a savings in laminating supplies. This idea is one that would be easily replicable in other Schools and Centers for additional cost savings and waste reduction for the University.

SAS Staff Recognition Award 2016 – “Green Office Clean-Out”, Green Team Operations Subcommittee

The SAS Green Team’s Operations Subcommittee was formed in 2016 as a break-out group of the larger SAS Green Team. The group met monthly with a main goal to share ideas and progress on sustainable operations. The subcommittee’s first project was to determine the most sustainable procedure for tackling a proper office clean-out. The team was successful in gathering the necessary information for this process and documenting the information in a clean and easy-to-read format.  This lead the Operations Subcommittee to be awarded the SAS Staff Recognition Award in 2016.
