Welcome to the Japanese Language Program at Penn!

University of Pennsylvania has one of the country’s most extensive modern Japanese language programs.  It offers extensive variety of modern Japanese language courses to diverse learners – both undergraduate and graduate students, including, but not limited to, students majoring and minoring in East Asian Studies. It provides a full course of study in Japanese every year, from beginning level Japanese to advanced Japanese at the eleventh and twelfth semester-levels.  We also offer a wide variety of special courses such as Japanese for the professions, Japanese–English Translation, Readings in Classical Japanese, and Japanese for Sinologist. We are always looking for new initiatives to meet various needs of our students learning Japanese.  Not only are we one of first programs to offer Business Japanese, but also our program recently began to offer the first beginning-level Japanese for Sinologist course in the USA.

Our language faculty and instructors are specialists in language pedagogy and dedicated to provide cutting-edge instruction.  Core Japanese courses particularly emphasize on enhancing the language proficiency and intercultural learning.  Curricula of special courses are specifically designed with consideration of needs and goals of learners’ learning.

Our classes are small with no more than 15 per class.  The students develop strong relationships with professors and fellow students, building a learning community with common goals and values of education.

I hope you will join us learning Japanese in our program at the University of Pennsylvania.   If you have any questions about the program, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I am looking forward to seeing you in our classrooms!
