Qualitative Data

Before the beginning of fieldwork for the first wave of the KDICP, extensive qualitative work was conducted in June and July of 1994 to inform the questionnaire, as well as to provide information on the content of conversations within social networks.

This qualitative work involved:

  • at least two focus groups in each site (three in Obisa and Wakula South), and
  • semi-structured interviews with 10 men and 10 women in each site;
  • In addition to the semi-structured interviews and focus groups there were two other projects: Nancy Luke conducted interviews in the KDICP sites on women’s reproductive health, and Alex Weinreb interviewed old men in Oyugis about elderly life in rural Kenya.
