Professor Simon Richter is a Professor of Germanic Languages and Literatures and Environmental Humanities at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the cultural history of sustainability in Germany and Northwestern Europe and on cultural responses to sea level rise and catastrophic flooding. He is a member of the Mellon-funded Humanities + Urbanism + Design Initiative at Penn. Every summer, he directs the Penn in Berlin & Rotterdam Program in conjunction with a course on Comparative Cultures of Sustainability. Simon is a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the Penn Program in Environmental Humanities. He is currently working on a book on Goethe’s Wetlands: Soggy Texts and Permeable Selves.

Andro Mathewson is an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania pursuing a double degree in PPE (Politics, Philosophy & Economics) and German, while minoring in History. His international upbringing sparked his interest in both international politics and the cultural significance of languages. Andro regularly assists the research effort for UPenn’s Department of Political Science under the guidance of Professor Horowitz and for the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. Outside his academic life, he is an active member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity and in his free time enjoys electronic music, fashion and traveling. Arjun Subramanyam is a third-year undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania double-majoring in Economics and International Relations. His academic interests lie within international development and educational equity, having had the opportunity to informally investigate issues of healthcare and development in Brazil and do non-profit policy work in early childhood education. In addition to his research, Arjun is actively involved in the University’s Philomathean Society, Penn Political Union, and Penn Society for International Development. Beidi Hu is a sophomore student at the University of Pennsylvania, interested in studying PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics), German and Consumer Psychology. Born and raised in the sleepless city of Shanghai, she has a research interest in intercultural communication, as well as behavioral economics and environmental policy.
