Wonil Jung grew up in Seoul, South Korea. He completed his undergraduate degree and doctoral coursework at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, where he received a B.S. in Chemistry. During his career, Wonil developed a chemical synthetic strategy for anisotropy-controlled 2D nanomaterials and studied spectroscopy and DFT calculations of 2D semiconducting nanostructures.

In Mallouk lab, Wonil studies the high-throughput screening of hydrogen oxidation catalysts, the durability of oxygen reduction catalysts and metal oxide supports, and solid hydroxide conductors for efficient energy conversion in alkaline fuel cells.

Outside of research, Wonil enjoys reading, going to the gym, and exploring cities.
