LAVA-Astro

The Milky Way is visible from Galápagos.

LAVA-Astro is an initiative to get the Galápagos community involved with citizen science in astronomy. A star-mapping project by the International Dark-Sky Association uses citizen science from around the world to map the visible stars. Places like the Galápagos that are less affected by light pollution are especially important to this project. We are looking for an ideal location in the Galápagos for local students to participate in this project and to learn techniques of astronomical observation.  LAVA-Astro also hopes to increase interest and engagement with astronomy in the local community. We have hosted training sessions teaching local guides to use telescopes and held community astronomy nights on the boardwalk.
