Dates
The summer program will be held Monday through Friday from Monday, June 22, 2015  until Friday, July 3, 2015 on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. We recommend that you try to arrive on Saturday, June 20th or early Sunday, June 21st at the latest and not leave until after the last session at 5 pm on Friday, July 3rd.

Program Schedule
Every weekday there will be a 3 hour morning session from 9 am – Noon and a 3 hour afternoon session from 2 pm – 5 pm.

Course Schedule and Curriculum

Room Schedule

On Monday, June 22nd at 8:30 am sharp, everyone should meet in room 401 of Fisher Bennett Hall, 3340 Walnut Street.
The entrance is pictured here.

At this time, I will give those of you not staying in campus housing your ID Cards as well as information about how to access the internet. Those of you staying in campus housing will receive your ID card and information about accessing the internet when you check in to the dorms. It is a good idea to keep your ID card with you while you are at Penn as you will need it to enter the library and your dorm building (if you are staying on campus).

At this time, I will also give you your name tags, copies of the day’s readings and other logistical information. The day’s plenary session will begin in room 401 at 9 am. Please make sure you have your computers and/or other electronic devices with which you would like to access Penn’s wireless internet and/or something to take notes on and with.

Between 10 and 10:15 AM, daily, there will be a break where coffee, tea, and light refreshments will be available. If you need coffee or tea before then, there is a Starbucks Coffee shop at 3401 Walnut, a Dunkin’ Donuts at 3437 Walnut St. and a coffee shop called Gia Pronto at 3736 Spruce St.

Here is a map of the campus where you can type in addresses or the names of buildings to see where they are located.

For your reference, the administrative office that the summer program will be run out of is in room 311, Claudia Cohen Hall, 249, South 36th Street (the entrance is pictured here).

Penn ID Cards
As you will most likely be arriving over the weekend, when administrative offices are not open, I need to get some information from you so that I can get your ID cards ready for you ahead of time. These cards will allow you to have access to campus buildings such as the library and (and for those of you staying on campus, the dorms) as well as the internet when you arrive.

Here is the information we will need from you:

-Your full name as you would like it to appear on your ID card and your certificate of completion for the program (indicating which name(s) are first, middle, and last)
-Where you will stay while here (on or off campus):
-Check-In Date:
-Check-Out Date:
-Your Birth Date (MM/DD/YYYY):
-A jpg photo – the photo should be color should resemble photos that would be used for government IDs (Color photo, taken within the past 6 months,  Full face, front view, unobstructed- no sunglasses, hats, scarves, etc.,  Normal street attire,  Approx. 2”x2” in size,  Plain white or neutral background,  The image from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head should be between 1” and 1 -3/8”, They must be in JPEG format, labeled [last name].[first name].)

Please send us this information by Wednesday, June 3rd at the very latest so that there is enough time to process everything before your arrival.

Once everyone’s information is received, it will be submitted to be entered into the system. Those of you staying off campus will then be sent an email from the University requesting some further information and also with instructions on how to get/create a PennKey (username) and password which will be what you will use to gain access to the wireless internet on campus. You will receive your ID cards on the morning of June 22nd before the first session of the program. Those of you staying on campus will be sent this email as soon as you sign up for your housing. You will pick up this Penn Card when you arrive at the dorm.

Travel
There are several options to get from the Philadelphia International Airport to the University of Pennsylvania’s campus:

  1. You can take the Airport Line Regional Rail train line to 30th Street Station. Here is the schedule. This train leaves from the airport every half hour from 4 am to 11:30 pm. This costs $8.00 during peak hours (M-F 4:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.) and $7.00 during off peak hours (M-F after 7 pm and all weekends and holidays).

From 30th Street Station, you can take either a cab to where you will be staying or the Green Line (an underground trolley line) – on any of the following numbers: 11, 13, 34, or 36, Westbound to the 36th and Sansom stop, which will be the second stop after 30th Street (the first stop is 33rd Street).

If you take a cab, there will be a line of them waiting outside of 30th Street Station.

If you take the trolley, you should exit 30th Street Station on the West side, cross 30th Street and follow the signs for the Green Line down into SEPTA’s 30th Street underground station. If you pay with cash, the trolley costs $2.25/ride (and you must have exact change). If you buy tokens, purchased in packs of two or more, each token is $1.80.

  1. You can take a cab from the airport to the campus. This costs around $35 plus tip.
  2. You can take the Lady Liberty Shuttle (215-724-8888) to the campus, which is $10/person + tip. The shuttle runs from 5:30 AM – 12 Midnight.
