Abstract:

A closed geodesic is a closed curve which cannot be made any shorter by small deformations.  Imagine a rubber band caught around a slippery solid object.  It is known that each closed manifold admits at least one closed geodesic, and conjectured that  each admits infinitely many.  In this talk we will use simple topological tools to examine this problem in many cases.
