Abstract: Curvature flows are one way of subcontracting topology problems out to the fine folks in geometric analysis. In this talk, I’ll introduce the simplest (and friendliest) curvature flow–the curve shortening flow (CSF). Simple to define and visualize, the theory of CSF is shocking. Not only is it interesting and useful, but it’s also nice! We’ll see some beautiful pictures of the (ostensibly) idyllic life in this world, as a peephole into the exciting (and chaotic) world of more general curvature flows.
