Abstract:

The history of mathematics in the Soviet Union occupies a unique place in the history of mathematics at large. This is in part due to a strive for independence from the academics of the west, as well as its more particular emphases and tenets. I’ll discuss some of these interesting features of the Soviet mathematical community along with the canonical question: What happened to mathematics on a global scale once the USSR collapsed? We’ll see that the outcome, which is expectedly complex and dynamic, has some definite trends provided we look in the right places.
