In two (real) dimensions, there is a correspondence between complex structures and conformal classes of Riemannian metrics.  We will discuss the correspondence and make use of it in both directions.  First, we will use the uniformization theorem to inspect the space of positively curved Riemannian metrics on the sphere .  For the reverse, we will use geodesics and curvature to examine the space of complex structures on a higher genus surface.
