Abstract:
What is a generating function? How does it give you information about a sequence? How can we find generating functions systematically? Once we have a generating function, how can we use (complex) analysis to find information about its coefficients? How much of this can be carried over to generating functions with more than one variable? I’ll answer all of these rhetorical questions (and more) through the application of analytic combinatorics (with lots of examples). No combinatorics knowledge will be assumed.
