Abstract: We will discuss interconnected theorems about zeros of vector fields and fixed points of maps such as the hairy ball theorem, Poincare-Hopf theorem and the Lefschetz fixed point theorem.  These ideas will then illuminate and motivate some generalizations related to the Euler characteristic and equivariant index theory.
