CampusPress

A CampusPress site has been created for your use. CampusPress is hosted on the web at web.sas.upenn.edu by a third-party vendor, CampusPress. It uses the WordPress platform. Do not store sensitive data, such as Social Security Numbers or student grades or identities.

Getting In and Around

  1. Browse to your CampusPress site at https://web.sas.upenn.edu/yourpennkey
  2. Use the “Log In” link in the upper left corner to log in with your PennKey credentials.
  3. You’ll see a black administrative menu across the top of your page. You can administer your site by using this admin menu or your Dashboard.
    1. To get to your Dashboard, click on the name of your site in the admin menu.
    2. When you’re in the Dashboard, click on the name of your site in the admin menu to return to the public-facing view of your site.
  4. On any page, you can move between viewing the page and editing it.
    1. When you are viewing a page, you will see an “Edit” link in the page and an “Edit Page” link in the admin menu.
    2. When you are editing a page, you will see a “View Page” link in the page and in the admin menu. (Remember to save your work by clicking “Update”.)

Getting Started

  1. Adjust the Site Title and Tagline as appropriate.
Dashboard > Appearance > Customize > Site Identity
  2. Check your account profile and make any needed changes.
Howdy, [User] > Edit My Profile
  3. You can change the visibility of the site (to make it private or public).
Dashboard > Settings > Reading > Site Visibility
  4. You’re welcome to keep the original theme (named “Twenty Eleven”). If you prefer, you can choose another theme. Various features of a CampusPress site (layout, color scheme, widget areas, and customizations) are dependent on the theme chosen.
    1. Go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes and browse the available themes. Each theme is listed with a small image of how it can look.
    2. Use the “Live Preview” link to see how your existing site would look in a standard configuration of the theme. (Customization can change many features of the standard configuration, and you can play with some of these.)
    3. When you’ve found a likely theme, click the “Activate” button to adopt it. If it doesn’t meet your needs and preferences, find another.
  5. You can check the Plugins and Tools for anything useful. (You can do this anytime.)

Your Content

Your site was created from a template that provides a default structure and several Pages with filler text. Replace the content on these pages with your own content.

  1. Go to a Page and click the “edit” button.
  2. You can use the Visual Editor to edit your pages.
  3. When you’re done editing a page, click the blue “Update” button in the right sidebar.

You can also create new pages, and you can delete pages that you don’t need.

Linking to Videos in VideoAnt

You can create a link to an annotated video in VideoAnt. Let’s assume that you’ve already created your annotated video.

  1. Log into your Ant Farm on the VideoAnt site,
    http://ant.umn.edu
  2. Move your mouse over your video. A grey rectangle will appear. Click the gear icon.
  3. In the Ant Settings window that appears, click “Share”.
  4. Copy the web address labeled “Share URL”.
  5. Go to a Page in your CampusPress site.
  6. Click “Edit” or “Edit Page” to edit it.
  7. Click the mouse where you want to insert the link. You will probably want to enter text and select the text to make the link.
  8. Click the link icon in the editing toolbar. It looks like three links of chain (as below).
  9. A little blank will appear. Paste your VideoAnt URL into it.
  10. Click the blue “Apply” button (with the bent white arrow) to apply the link.
  11. Click the blue “Update” button in the right sidebar to save the Page.
  12. View the Page and check your work.

Incorporating PDF and Media files

  1. To add PDFs, images, video, or sound files, go to Dashboard > Media and click the “Add New” button. You will add your media to a Media Library for later use.
  2. Then, while you’re editing a Page, put your cursor where you want the media to appear, and click the “Add Media” button to select your media from the Library and insert it into your page. That process will embed image, video, and sound files in your page; it will create links to PDF files.

Menus

You can add, delete, and rearrange menu items in Dashboard > Appearance > Menus.

Final Steps

  1. Click around and make sure the site is ready for public viewing. You may want to change it from private to public (Dashboard > Settings > Reading > Site Visibility).
  2. When you’re ready for the public to visit, arrange for your department to make a link to your site. A link will also allow Google and other search engines find your site.
