VideoAnt
VideoAnt is a web-based tool, provided by the University of Minnesota. We can use VideoAnt to add annotations, or comments, to videos that are already hosted on the web.
- Annotated videos on VideoAnt are called “Ants”.
- Users manage their Ants from their account dashboard, known as their “Ant Farm”.
Preparation
Let’s assume that you already have a video online, either in YouTube or in an unprotected folder in the web_root section of media.sas.
- For purposes of using video in VideoAnt for your 2018 Teaching Portfolio, use:
path: Home / web_root / roml690 / 18a
web address: https://media.sas.upenn.edu/app/sso/index.php?directory_id=28065
Instructions
- Log into the VideoAnt website.
https://ant.umn.edu/ - The site lets you use Google, Facebook, or Twitter credentials to log in.
- VideoAnt recommends that you use Chrome because some problems appear in other browsers.
- The front page offers a four-minute introductory video tutorial.
To add a video, select the “New Ant” button.
- Paste the URL (web address) of the video into the blank provided and press “Load”.
- The video will load into an annotation screen.
To annotate the video, begin playing the video.
- When you reach a point in the video where you want an annotation to begin, press the “add annotation” icon located below the video.
- Two blanks will appear to the right of the video. Provide a title and your comment. When you hit return, the annotation will end.
- A marker in the timeline of the video will indicate where the annotation begins. You can drag the marker to a new place on the timeline.
To share your Ant, select the settings gear icon located below the video.
- Select “Share URL”.
- Select the URL and copy it.
- The URL is now ready to paste into a web page as a link to your Ant.
- You can change the permission levels to “View” in the drop-down menu nearby.
