SFMOMA’S OPEN SPACE

Intern

Founded in 1935, SFMOMA was the first museum on the West Coast devoted to modern and contemporary art. From the outset, the museum has championed the most innovative and challenging art of its time, and we continue to exhibit and collect work by both modern masters and younger, less-established artists. By embracing the challenge of the new and unexpected, we hope to encourage fresh ways of seeing, thinking, and engaging with the world. SFMOMA’s internship program offers insight into the operations of one of the country’s leading art museums and allows interns to gain valuable hands-on experience.

On May 14, 2016, the museum reopened after a multiyear transformation that more than doubled the museum’s exhibition space and added art-filled free-to-the-public galleries. Our online offerings have been similarly expanded, as we continue to reimagine all the ways in which we can deepen discourse around a range of artistic and cultural conversations, in the Bay Area and beyond.

OPEN SPACE, SFMOMA’s community-focused digital magazine, is a vibrant forum for unruly, non-instrumentalized gestures. We’re interested in what it means, in this day and age, to speak from a place. But we also like to rove around, commissioning and supporting critical, experimental, and poetic ruminations by artists, writers, and thinkers from all over the world. Taking our name from an influential Bay Area poetry magazine that appeared in 1964, Open Space is currently home to works by over 400 guest contributors, 62 columnist alumni, and 6 guest editors. Contributions include conversations between artists, critics, and others; thematic multi-post projects; and behind-the-scenes news related to SFMOMA. We also host parties, performances, and other live events.

What to expect

A RealArts@Penn intern will get a hands-on experience at a world-class art institution in the middle of a dynamic period of expansion and change. This internship is in the Content Strategy and Digital Engagement division, and the intern will work directly with the two-person Community Engagement team as we explore new directions for our newly redesigned site, publish our summer issue, and prepare for fall programming. The RealArts@Penn intern will play an integral role in facilitating the magazine’s day-to-day operations and helping with tasks specific to its evolution as an innovative online magazine.
