Intermediate Valency

Chemists rely on precise, integer oxidation states for convenient description of metal ions. Yet, such heuristics can fail to capture the electronic essence of compounds with highly mixed multi-configurational ground states. We are working to prepare f-element compounds and molecular materials whose valence can only precisely be described as intermediate between canonical oxidation states. Such compounds are expected to provide a new method for accomplishing strong spin polarization in molecules and molecular materials.
