Research

Our research focuses on the behavior, communication, and social cognition of group-living primates. We seek to understand what animals know about their own and other individuals’ social relationships, how they use this knowledge in their social interactions and vocal communication, and how social relationships and social cognition contribute to fitness. Our more recent research considers how variation in social bonds and behavior is related to variation in reproductive success.

Our graduate students have conducted research on an array of different species and social systems, including forest guenons, elephants, geladas, hyenas, bonobos, and domestic dogs.
