Each country in the SWAF survey has datasets for the Eligible Respondents, Husbands, and Screening and Household Information. In India, Pakistan, and Thailand, there are community datasets as well. The datasets are formatted for use with STATA software (Version 6.0).
Downloading and Accessing the Datasets
All of the SWAF datasets listed below are available for public use.
The datasets have been compressed (zipped) for faster downloading. To download a file, click on the title of the dataset you wish to use. You will then be prompted to save the file to a directory, where you can access the file.
In order to use the files after they have been downloaded and saved, you will need to unzip it. We recommend using WinZip, a zip utility program, which can be downloaded from the web. If you do not have WinZip installed on your computer, you can go to the website at http://www.winzip.com to install it.
Merging Datasets
In all countries, data was gathered from eligible respondents and their husbands. Therefore, it is possible to create a merged dataset to analyze and compare couple responses. Datasets can be easily merged using Stata software. To merge Eligible Respondent (ER) and Husband datasets, you must use the “match merge” procedure, as described in the Stata Reference Manual Release 6, Volume 2 (pp. 360-367).
In order to merge ER and Husband datasets, you must first sort each data file by a variable that is a unique identifier within each and also common to both datasets. You can then merge the ER and husband datasets using this variable. In most of the countries, this common variable is usually the identification number of the Eligible Respondent or the Husband. The table below identifies the variable you should use to merge the ER and Husband datasets in each country.
Country | Merge Variable Description | Variable Name |
INDIA | Unique Identification Number | idno |
MALAYSIA | Couple Identification Number* | coupleid |
PAKISTAN | Unique Identification Number | respid |
PHILIPPINES | ER’s Identification Number | ra1a |
THAILAND | Husband’s Questionnaire Number | hqnum |
*Note on Couple Dataset in Malaysia
Due to errors in data collection, not all of the 604 couples obtained from merging the Eligible Respondent and Husband datasets are true matches. This was determined by comparing the assumed “couple” answers to a series of questions where their responses should either be identical or in close agreement.
This led us to discard 213 couples who are not true matches according to our criteria. This leaves 391 couples in the final dataset. We strongly recommend that you read the memo describing how we arrived at the final couple dataset. You may download this document here.
Since the merging of husbands and wives poses problems unique to Malaysia, we have elected to provide a copy of the couple dataset for this country. You may download this dataset by clicking here : COUPLEMalay.zip.
