Long standing interests in the history of scientific racism have led me to the debate surrounding 19th century physician Samuel Morton. In “The Making and Unmaking of Race,” my co-curators and I investigate the ways that Samuel Morton’s cranial measurements were used to construct modern, biological notions of race. This exhitrk drew me into the recent controversy about Stephen Jay Gould’s analysis of Morton’s measurements. And it will serve as the basis of a future film about Morton and scientific racism.
