Abstract

“After the collapse of the Late Bronze Age polities across the eastern Mediterranean ca. 1200 BCE, elements of a new material culture attributed to the Philistines suddenly appear in the southern coastal plain of early Iron Age Israel. These elements include hearths, cylindrical loom weights, bathtubs, and female mourning figures, among others. However, no other aspect of their material culture is as distinctive and enigmatic as the beautifully decorated Philistine bichrome pottery, which Dr. Meiberg has been investigating for the past twenty years. In this talk, she will focus on various aspects of the origin of the Philistines and the development and iconography of their ceramic fine wares. Dr. Meiberg will also share with you her latest research projects that she will continue when heading back into the field this summer.”
