Abstract:

“Evangelical preaching and confessional scholarship often take for granted that God’s actions in the Book of Numbers are morally right. Drawing on insights from monster theory, this paper considers whether Numbers invites a more daring and critical question: does God do good or evil? The questions we allow ourselves to ask of this text carry implications for Appalachian communities that can be both sustained and held captive by their religious traditions.”
