While the focus of the Forum was student action, it is important to note that the students were offered structure, resources, guidance, and support in their journey.
Organizers and Steering Committee
Melissa Brown Goodall is Director of the Global University Climate Forum and the lead author and editor of this publication. A geographically distributed Steering Committee guided the processes and the programming throughout: Maria del Coro Arizmendi Arriaga, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (Mexico); Michelle Brown, University of Edinburgh (Scotland); Manfred Braune, University of Cape Town (South Africa); Kensuke Fukushi, University of Tokyo and United Nations University (Japan); and Will Syddall, University of New South Wales (Australia). The 2020-2021 events and activities were made possible with thoughtful dedication from a team of organizers: Natalia Escobar-Pemberthy, Scot Bearss, Ashley Jankowski, and Nivanthi Karunaratne. Partners and Funders
The University of Pennsylvania assumed the secretariat of the Forum in March 2021, but the program continues to enjoy excellent support from Yale University, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Cape Town, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico, the University of New South Wales, University of Tokyo, University of Copenhagen, and Nottingham Trent University. The Forum was originally an output of the Sustainable Campus Initiative of the International Alliance of Research Universities and that group has continued to be a strong partner and funder as the Forum has grown. The International Sustainable Campus Network provided funding, expertise, and outreach support during the course of the 2020-2021 program, and outreach and programmatic support from the International Association of Universities and the Alliance for Sustainability Leadership in Education were key to the success of the Forum.
Speakers, Moderators, and Facilitators
We cultivated line-up of speakers who were prepared to talk about key concepts our student participants might not have access to on their campuses. Our series of workshops all took place during the week of 9 November 2020, which would have been the first week of COP26 had it not been postponed. In addition to diversity of perspective, the organizers worked hard to ensure reasonable variety in the ethnic backgrounds, locations, and ages of our speakers. We enlisted moderators from our partner entities to ensure that the webinars maintained felt engaging and interactive.
