a freshwater sponge (yes, those exist) that I found during the summer of 2022 in a narrow channel of one of the Finger Lakes (Owasco)

Hullo. My name is Emile (eh-MEEL). This is my professional page as a scientist employed by Mother Earth. I study aquatic sponges (e.g. Spongebob and relatives) through a soft matter physics lens with principles and methods from biomechanics, rheology, and non-equilibrium thermodynamics.

I received my Ph.D. in Physics at the end of 2021 from the University of Pennsylvania under the supervision of scientists Alison Sweeney and Paul Janmey. Paul has been cited over 70,000 times and you can read about some of Alison’s trailblazing work here. I was incredibly fortunate to have been co-advised by them. My dissertation (in full) can be accessed with a little sleuthing by the curious.

I adore physics, the history of physics, and the ocean. I plan to keep publishing my scientific ideas independently.
