OneHealth: Antimicrobial Resistance

Antimicrobial resistance is a health concern for the inhabitants of Galápagos.

In our initial sampling in 2022, we found antibiotic resistance gene (ARBG) in the ocean water near inhabited, urban sites in San Cristóbal. In 2023, we expanded our sampling to include sewage samples, in addition to expanded sampling of ocean water in inhabited and uninhabited sites. By testing these samples for the presence of the ABRG sequence, we can project acute and long-term risks for those with prolonged exposure to the water in those sites. Similarly, by comparing the findings to sewage samples, we can better determine the sources of  ABRG in the ocean to make informed recommendations to limit the quantity reaching the ocean.
