OneHealth: Climate Change and Mental Health

Climate change can affect our internal world, just as it does the external environment.

In 2022, members of GERA investigated the impact of climate change on the mental health of adolescents living in San Cristobal, Galapagos. We found the young people surveyed had a limited understanding of climate change and its causes, and they held generally negative perceptions of the future of the island due to effects of pollution and climate change. Current endeavors seek to reduce climate-related anxiety in adolescents through interventions that weave education and activism with coping mechanisms, like practicing meditation, creating art, and interacting with nature.
