Bread and beer were the staple foodstuffs of Ancient Egypt. Although abundantly represented in artwork and texts, actual archaeological evidence for the techniques of production and consumption of bread are comparatively rare. Dr. Josef Wegner, Professor of Egyptology in NELC, discusses recent excavations at Abydos in Upper Egypt of a temple bakery where we can examine institutional-scale baking and how it relates to daily life in an ancient community of Egypt’s late Middle Kingdom (1850-1700 BCE).
