New Comic Pages Posted

Mulligan Ah

Those of you out there who are not on our email list may be interested to know that 8 new pages of the comic went up yesterday. This installment takes us out of the dark interior of the Martello tower and into the open air of Sandycove. Also, jut in time for the holidays, this set includes Mulligan’s infamous Ballad of Joking Jesus, as well as some other good fun. We hope you enjoy reading them as much as we’ve enjoyed making them.

  1. I love the new pages, but it seems to me that some of the speech on page 48 is misattributed. Surely, “To the secretary of state for war” is said by Stephen; yet the tail of the speech bubble seems to point to Haines. Similarly, “Rather bleak in wintertime, I should say” is Haines’s line, though the tail points to Stephen. Am I missing something here?

  2. These balloons got moved about quite a bit, Shawn, which any cartoonist will tell you is a generally very bad idea. You start losing your ability to see them fresh once you start doing that.

Somehow, through a mistake in translating these layouts from drawings I’d done in another format, I had attributed the “Twelve quid’ remark to Stephen rather than Mulligan as the book clearly states. Mike caught it on the edits (thank god!) and Josh then moved balloons around accordingly so that the pattern of speech might still make sense despite the distance between the figures. But the tails should point differently to make this clearer. Our gaff! We’ll get a corrected version up on the site tomorrow, and thanks for catching it!

(I’ve got to get some kind of “No Prize” thing together for the site…”
