M. Susan Lindee
Janice and Julian Bers Professor of the History and Sociology of Science
Lindee has been Visiting Professor, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; Visiting Professor, Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation (IDEC), Hiroshima University, Hiroshima, Japan; Associate Dean for the Social Sciences, Penn Arts & Sciences; and Department Chair. She is currently Chair of the Board of the Consortium for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine, which successfully matched its NEH challenge grant and has a new endowment; and she is Diversity Search Adviser for the Social Sciences in Penn Arts & Sciences.
Lindee has a book manuscript, Rational Fog, under review at Harvard University Press, and is developing a co-edited volume with Warwick Anderson, with a working title of Oceanic Genealogies:Pacific Currents in the History of Human Genetics. In November 2017, she was Ship’s Historian for a Lindblad cruise of the Galapagos Islands.
Lindee worked as a journalist for ten years prior to earning her Ph.D. in history and philosophy of science from Cornell University and joining Penn’s faculty in 1990.

The late Janice Bers graduated from Penn with an education degree in 1939.
