Climate Change Adaptation: Chimborazo

Adapting to climate change includes drought preparation.

New in 2025, this project seeks to understand more about the climate risks facing the people of Santa Catalina, an indigenous community nestled near Chimborazo Volcano in Riobamba, Ecuador. Here, droughts are the main threat: causing energy shortages, complicating life for individuals and for their agricultural livelihood, and contributing to dry conditions where wildfires thrive.

Following the steps of our Galápagos Climate Adaptation Project, our project with the community of Santa Catalina will need to begin with the initial phases of risk and needs assessments through conversations with residents. Other related interests include water management and working with indigenous expertise. These efforts will contribute to fully tailoring an adaptation protocol to the specific needs and climate risks of each site in future trips.
