Climate Change Adaptation: Guatemala
Coastal adaptation requires a multifaceted approach.
New in 2025, this project seeks to understand more about the climate risks facing El Gariton, a town on the pacific coast of Guatemala. Here, increased heat and storm surges threaten both human and non-human animals, especially marine turtles who nest on the sandy shores. We have partnered with a Marine Conservation Center in Guatemala to apply our climate change adaptation model to work with the broader community of El Gariton.
Following the steps of our Galápagos Climate Adaptation Project, our project in Guatemala will need to begin with the initial phases of risk and needs assessments through conversations with residents. Other related interests at this site include bolstering ongoing coastal mangrove restoration and marine turtle conservation. These efforts will contribute to fully tailoring an adaptation protocol to the specific needs and climate risks of each site in future trips.
