Boole Professor / Chair of Mathematics at University College Cork, Ireland.
University College Cork (UCC) wishes to make a permanent professorial appointment within the School of Mathematical Sciences to the Boole Chair of Mathematics. The position is named after George Boole who was the first professor of mathematics at Queen’s College Cork, now UCC, appointed in 1849. The School of Mathematical Sciences comprises the disciplines of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics and has a permanent academic staff of 30.5, nine of whom are affiliated to the mathematics discipline and work across the areas of non-commutative probability and operator algebras, harmonic analysis, numerical methods for SDEs, differential geometry, algebraic geometry and classical analysis. While the position is advertised in tandem with several other appointments within the UCC Futures – Quantum and Photonics, applicants from all areas of (pure) mathematics are encouraged to apply.
The Boole Chair of Mathematics will play a pivotal leadership role in the development of Mathematics in the School and across the University. This leadership role includes: building research capacity in Mathematics and maximising the opportunities and potential for Mathematics research within the School and University; supporting the School’s responsibilities for delivery of BSc and MSc Programmes; growing enrolment to our PhD program; and embedding Mathematical research in the various Thematic Areas within University College Cork’s Futures research initiative, with UCC Futures – Quantum and Photonics being an immediate priority. Applicants should have an international standing as a leading researcher and scholar in Mathematics as evidenced by an established track record of peer reviewed publications in top-tier Mathematics journals and external research funding. Reporting to the Head of School of Mathematical Sciences, the appointee will have relevant teaching and research experience enabling them to provide leadership in the discipline.
