Biographical Information | John was a Ph.D. candidate in the Art and Archaeology of the Mediterranean World graduate group, where he focused on Roman archaeology and architectural history. He earned an A.B. in Classics and Anthropology from Harvard in 2012 and an M.St. in Classical Archaeology from Exeter College, Oxford in 2013. He defended his dissertation and graduated from Penn in the spring of 2024. His research interests include architecture and urbanism, Roman provincial archaeology, ancient knowledge networks and information exchange, and digital approaches to architectural documentation and analysis. He has worked as an excavator and researcher at sites in Tunisia, Greece, Israel, and Turkey, and is currently a member of the field team at Sardis, where he is working on the publication of one of the city’s monumental Roman gates. His dissertation examines how the spread of architectural knowledge impacted theater design and construction in Rome’s northwestern provinces during the first two centuries of Roman rule. His research has also been supported by a 2021–2022 Fulbright Grant. He currently holds a postdoctural position at the University of Toronto where he is working on the theater at Falerii Novi as a case study in Roman global architecture. |
