Abstract: In 2010, Ngo Bau Chau was awarded the Fields Medal for his proof of the Fundamental lemma, which is an important number-theoretic identity required for proving some of the conjectures in Langland’s program. Affine Springer fibers from geometric representation theory were crucial players in Ngo’s proof. In this talk, I will give a basic introduction to affine springer fibers and their different avatars in number theory and geometry.
