Abstract:

Back in the 40’s, best buds Eilenberg and Mac Lane developed category theory jointly alongside algebraic topology. In fact, we can view a topological space itself as a (higher) category (the fundamental (n)-groupoid), and use this as our main example. We begin by weeding out the subtleties of higher-categorical structure by restricting ourselves to 2-categories. It is desirable to go even higher, but what it means for two things to be “the same” becomes hazy and we discuss some difficulties that arise. To put it bluntly, wrapping your head around higher categories is kind of tricky; so despite the fancy words, I will try to keep things li(gh)t.
